P.I. Tchaikovsky (ACG listing) - Born May 7, 1840 in Votkinsk, Viatka district, Russia. Died Nov 6, 1893 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Tchaikovsky is another of Dan's classical influences.

Chuck Berry.com - Born Charles Edward Anderson Berry on Oct 18, 1926 in St Louis, Missouri. "Of all the early breakthrough rock & roll artists, none is more important to the development of the music than Chuck Berry. He is its greatest songwriter, the main shaper of its instrumental voice, one of its greatest guitarists and one of its greatest performers. Quite simply, without him, there would be no Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Bob Dylan nor a myriad others. There would be no standard 'Chuck Berry guitar intro.' The clippety clop rhythms of rockabilly would not have been mainstreamed into the now standard 4/4 rock & roll beat. There would be no obsessive wordplay by modern-day tunesmiths; in fact, the whole history (and artistic level) of rock & roll songwriting would have been much poorer without him. Elvis may have fueled rock & roll's imagery, but Chuck Berry was its heartbeat and original mindset." - Cub Koda, AMG

The Everly Brothers.com - The Everly Brothers Formed in 1954, and disbanded in 1973. Their close, two-part harmonies were a key influence on The Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel, among others, who employed harmonies as part of their sound. Don Everly was born Feb 1, 1937 in Brownie, KY. Phil Everly was Born on Jan 19, 1939 in Chicago, IL.

Elvis.com - Born Elvis Aaron Presley on Jan 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. Died Aug 16, 1977 in Memphis, Tennessee. "Elvis Presley may be the single most important figure in American 20th-century popular music. He was the musician most responsible for popularizing rock & roll on an international level. Dozens upon dozens of international smashes from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s, as well as the steady sales of his catalog and reissues since his death in 1977, may make him the single highest-selling performer in history." - Ritchie Unterberger, AMG. His popular title says it all: 'The King of rock and roll.' Not even Michael Jackson can boast that claim to fame.

Doc Watson (AMG listing) - Born Mar 2, 1923 in Deep Gap, NC. "In [the latter half of the 20th] century there were three preeminently influential guitar players: Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, and Arthel "Doc" Watson, a flat-picking genius from Deep Gap, North Carolina. Unlike the other two, Watson was in middle age before gaining any attention. Since 1960, though, when Watson was recorded with his family and friends in Folkways' Old Time Music at Clarence Ashley's, people have remained in awe of this gentle blind man who sings and picks with a pure and emotional authenticity. The present generation, folkies and country pickers alike, including Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill, the late Clarence White, Emmylou Harris, [Dan Fogelberg], and literally hundreds of others, acknowledge their great debt to Watson." - David Vinopal, AMG

The Beatles.com - The Beatles formed in Liverpool, England in 1960, and disbanded in 1970. "They were the greatest and most influential act of the rock era, and introduced more innovations into popular music than any other rock band of the 20th century. Their supremacy as rock icons remains unchallenged to this day. As composers, their craft and melodic inventiveness were second to none, and key to the evolution of rock from its blues/R&B-based forms into a style that was far more eclectic, but equally profound. In the recording studio, they were instrumental in pioneering advanced techniques and multi-layered arrangements." -- Richie Unterberger, AMG. Decades after their breakup in 1970, the Beatles annually still outsell many bands currently under contract, and their store displays take up more space than any other pop act out there. The British Invasion starts here.

Peter, Paul and Mary.com - Peter, Paul and Mary formed in 1961 in New York, NY, and disbanded in 1970. The most popular folk music band in history.

The Hollies (AMG listing) - The Hollies formed in 1962 in Manchester, England. They were one of the best and most commercially successful pop/rock acts of the British Invasion. Graham Nash was a founding member.

Simon and Garfunkel (AMG listing) - Simon and Garfunkel, the most successful folk-rock duo of the 1960s, formed in 1964 in New York, NY, and disbanded in 1970.

The Byrds.com - The Byrds formed in 1964 in Los Angeles, CA, and disbanded in 1973. "Although they only attained the huge success of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and the Beach Boys for a short time in the mid-'60s, time has judged the Byrds to be nearly as influential as those groups in the long run. They were not solely responsible for devising folk-rock, but they were certainly more responsible than any other single act (Dylan included) for melding the innovations and energy of the British Invasion with the best lyrical and musical elements of contemporary folk music. The jangling, 12-string guitar sound of leader Roger McGuinn's Rickenbacker was permanently absorbed into the vocabulary of rock. They also played a vital role in pioneering psychedelic rock and country-rock, the unifying element being their angelic harmonies and restless eclecticism." - Jason Ankeny, AMG. David Crosby was a founding member and very influential in developing their sound.

Buffalo Springfield - Official site. Buffalo Springfield formed in 1966 in Los Angeles, California, and disbanded in 1968. "Apart from the Byrds, no other American band had as great an impact on folk-rock and country-rock ‹ really, the entire Californian rock sound ‹ than Buffalo Springfield. The group's formation is the stuff of legend: driving on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay spotted a hearse that Stills was sure belonged to Neil Young, a Canadian he had crossed paths with earlier. Indeed it was, and with the addition of fellow hearse passenger and Canadian Bruce Palmer on bass and ex-Dillard Dewey Martin on drums, the cluster of ex-folkys determined, as the Byrds had just done, to become a rock & roll band." - Richie Unterberger & Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMG.

James Gang.com - Official site. The James Gang formed in 1966 in Cleveland, Ohio, and disbanded in 1976. The brilliant songwriting skills and inventive instrumentation of Joe Walsh helped make the James Gang one of the top hard-rock acts in America in the early 1970s.

Ventura Highway.com - America's Official site. America formed in 1967 in London, England. Although they formed in England, America was definitely an American band. They were a popular light folk-rock act of the early 1970s and had several Top Ten hits, including the number ones "A Horse with No Name" and "Sister Golden Hair."

Poco.com - Brand new official web site! Poco formed in 1967 in Los Angeles, California. One of the first and longest-lasting country-rock groups, Poco had its roots in the dying embers of Buffalo Springfield.

Speedwagon.com - Official site. REO Speedwagon formed in 1967 in Champaign, Illinois. Dan's manager, Irving Azoff, also managed this band. The hardest-working arena rock band of the 1970s.

Crosby, Stills and Nash.com - Crosby, Stills & Nash formed in 1968 in Laurel Canyon, California. The only American-based band to approach the overall societal impact of the Beatles.

The Flying Burrito Brothers (AMG listing) - The Flying Burrito Brothers formed in 1968 in Nashville, Tennessee. They helped forge the connection between rock and country, and with their 1969 debut album, "The Gilded Palace of Sin," they virtually invented the blueprint for country-rock. Though the band's glory days were brief, they left behind a small body of work that proved vastly influential both in rock and country.

Little Feat.com - Little Feat formed in 1969 in Los Angeles, California. Led by songwriter/guitarist Lowell George, they were a wildly eclectic band, bringing together strains of blues, R&B, country and rock & roll.

The Eagles.com - The Eagles formed in 1971 in Los Angeles, California. They were among the most successful recording and performing acts of the 1970s, with five number one singles and four number one albums. Dan is good friends with the Eagles, and was their opening act at many of their concerts.

Firefall.com - Firefall formed in 1975 in Boulder, Colorado. The mellow, easy country-rock sounds of Firefall, coupled with the group's penchant for pop melodies and high-pitched harmonies, produced a series of successful LPs in the late '70s and a series of chart singles, including the Top Ten hit "You Are the Woman." The group was formed by former Flying Burrito Brother Rick Roberts, who handled vocals, guitar, and most of the songwriting duties; he was joined by fellow ex-Burrito and Byrd Michael Clarke on drums, ex-Spirit and Jo Jo Gunne bassist Mark Andes, guitarist/vocalist Jock Bartley, guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Larry Burnett, and keyboardist/woodwind player David Muse, who joined in 1977. The group recorded its self-titled debut in 1976; it and its follow-up, Luna Sea, both went gold, and their third album, Elan, went platinum. However, the group's commercial fortunes began to decline, and even though Muse experimented with adding different instruments to the overall sound, Firefall's relaxed, toned-down approach simply wore out its welcome as pop trends moved elsewhere. Jock Bartley reformed the group in 1994 for the album Messenger. — Steve Huey (AMG). Dan Fogelberg is a friend and former neighbor of members of this band. This webmaster was fortunate enough to meet and "hang out" with members of Firefall and Dan Fogelberg at the "tarpaper house" in Nederland, Colorado, in the autumn of 1978. At the time, I was living in Boulder, had been writing songs for about two years, and was trying to teach myself how to play guitar, but was not making much progress. As the evening progressed, I was invited to spend the night to show off my songs and get a lesson or two from Dan and one member of Firefall (which one, I'm not sure), but for one or two stupid reasons (mostly having to do with handing the keys to my new car over to my next door neighbor, who wanted to get down the mountain back to Boulder before we got snowed in), I declined the offer. It's the worst decision I made in my entire life, as it could have opened up doors for me musically. Imagine being snowed in at the tarpaper house for at least two days, learning guitar and showing your original songs to Dan and members of Firefall. All together now: "You IDIOT!!!"

Joan Baez.com - Born Jan 9, 1941 in Staten Island, NY, Joan Baez was the most accomplished interpretive folksinger of the 1960s. She has influenced nearly every aspect of popular music in a career still going strong after more than 35 years.

Jackson Browne.com - Born Oct 9, 1948 in Heidelberg, Germany. "In many ways, Jackson Browne was the quintessential sensitive Californian singer-songwriter of the early 1970s. Only Joni Mitchell and James Taylor ranked alongside him in terms of influence, but neither artist tapped into the post-'60s zeitgeist like Browne." - AMG

Margaritaville.com - Jimmy Buffet was born Dec 25, 1946 in Pascogoula, Mississippi. With his beach bum character and tropical folk-rock style, Jimmy Buffet endeared himself to millions with songs like "Margaritaville."

Eric Clapton (official web site) - Born Eric Patrick Clapp on Mar 30, 1945 in Ripley, England. "By the time Eric Clapton launched his solo career with the release of his self-titled debut album in August 1970, he was long established as one of the world's major rock stars due to his group affiliations — the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, and Blind Faith — affiliations that had demonstrated his claim to being the best rock guitarist of his generation." - William Ruhlmann, AMG

Judy Collins.com - Born May 1, 1939 in Seattle, Washington, Judy Collins was one of the major interpretive folksingers of the 1960s. A child prodigy at classical piano, she turned to folk music at the age of 15 and released her first album, A Maid of Constant Sorrow, in 1961 when she was 22.

CrosbyCPR.com - David Crosby was born Aug 14, 1941 in Los Angeles, California. "The singular odyssey of David Crosby remains one of the more remarkable tales in the annals of music history. As a founding member of the pioneering American groups the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash, he helped create and popularize the highly influential folk-rock sound, forging the richly harmonic, radiantly acoustic approach which defined the West Coast music scene for years to follow; he also sold millions of records and enjoyed a cultural impact equaled by few of his contemporaries." - Jason Ankeny, AMG

Jerry Douglas.com - Born 1955 in Columbus, OH. As one of the premiere dobro players in bluegrass, new-acoustic, and country music, Jerry "Flux" Douglas toured and recorded with everyone from Emmylou Harris, Ricky Skaggs, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band to mandolin sensation David Grisman and banjo innovator Bela Fleck. He also recorded with Dan in the studio on 1985's High Country Snows.

Bob Dylan.com - Born Robert Allen Zimmerman on May 24, 1941 in Duluth, Minnesota, "Bob Dylan's influence on popular music is incalculable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singer/songwriter to winding, hallucinatory, stream-of-conscious narratives. As a vocalist, he broke down the notions that in order to perform, a singer had to have a conventionally good voice, thereby redefining the role of vocalist in popular music. As a musician, he sparked several genres of pop music, including electrified folk-rock and country-rock." - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMG

Glenn Frey - Born Nov 6, 1948 in Detroit, MI. "After co-founding the Eagles, Frey enjoyed a remarkable run as a member of one of the decade's most successful bands, assuming lead vocals on smashes including "Take It Easy," "Tequila Sunrise," "New Kid in Town," "Lyin' Eyes" and "Heartache Tonight." While remaining best known for his tenure in the Eagles, Glenn Frey also enjoyed considerable success as a solo performer, with a career dating back to the glory days of the Detroit rock scene of the mid-1960s." - Jason Ankeny, AMG

Art Garfunkel.com - Born Nov 5, 1941 in Queens, NY, Art Garfunkel was part of one of the most successful duos in pop history. After Simon and Garfunkel split up in 1970, Art pursued a career as a solo artist and actor.

Emmylou Harris (AMG listing) - Born Apr 2, 1947 in Birmingham, Alabama. "Though other performers sold more records and earned greater fame, few left as profound an impact on contemporary music as Emmylou Harris. Blessed with a crystalline voice, a remarkable gift for phrasing and a restless creative spirit, she travelled a singular artistic path, proudly carrying the torch of "Cosmic American music" passed down by her mentor, Gram Parsons. With the exception of only Neil Young ‹ not surprisingly an occasional collaborator ‹ no other mainstream star established a similarly large body of work as consistently iconoclastic, eclectic or daring; even more than three decades into her career, Harris' latter-day music remained as heartfelt, visionary and vital as her earliest recordings." - AMG.

George Harrison - Official site. Born Feb 25, 1943 in Liverpool, England. Died Nov 29, 2001 in Los Angeles, CA. "As lead guitarist for the Beatles, George Harrison provided the band with a lyrical style of playing in which every note mattered. Harrison was one of millions of young Britons inspired to take up the guitar by British skiffle king Lonnie Donegan's recording of "Rock Island Line." But he had more dedication than most, and with the encouragement of a slightly older school friend ‹ Paul McCartney ‹ he advanced quickly in his technique and command of the instrument. Harrison developed his style and technique slowly and painstakingly over the several years, learning everything he could from the records of Carl Perkins, Duane Eddy, Chet Atkins, Buddy Holly, and Eddie Cochran. By age 15, he was allowed to sit in with the Quarry Men, the Liverpool group founded by John Lennon, of which McCartney was a member; by 16 he was a full-fledged member of the group [soon to be called the Beatles]." - Bruce Eder, AMG The "quiet" Beatle passed from this life to the next on Thursday, November 29, 2001, at approximately 1:30PM Pacific Time. He died at a friend's home in Los Angeles, CA, with his wife, Olivia, and son, Dhani, at his side.

Janis Joplin.com - Born Jan 19, 1943 in Port Arthur, TX. Died Oct 4, 1970 in Los Angeles, CA. "The greatest White female rock singer of the 1960s, Janis Joplin was also a great blues singer, making her material her own with her wailing, raspy, supercharged emotional delivery. First rising to stardom as the frontwoman for San Francisco psychedelic band Big Brother & the Holding Company, she left the group in the late '60s for a brief and uneven (though commercially successful) career as a solo artist." - Richie Unterberger, AMG

Carole King.com - Born Feb 9, 1942 in Brooklyn, NY. "While the landmark album Tapestry earned her superstar status, singer/songwriter Carole King had already firmly established herself as one of pop music's most gifted and successful composers, with work recorded by everyone from the Beatles to Aretha Franklin." - Jason Ankeny, AMG.

John Lennon.com - Born Oct 9, 1940 in Liverpool, England. Died Dec 8, 1980 in New York, NY. "Out of all the Beatles, John Lennon had the most interesting - and frustrating - solo career. Lennon was capable of inspired, brutally honest confessional songwriting and melodic songcraft; he also had a tendency to rest on his laurels, churning out straight-ahead rock & roll without much care. But the extremes, both in his music and his life, were what made him fascinating. Where Paul McCartney was content to be a rock star, Lennon dabbled in everything from revolutionary politics to the television talk-show circuit during the early '70s. After releasing a pair of acclaimed albums, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, in the early '70s, Lennon sunk into an infamous "lost weekend" where his musical output was decidedly uneven and his public behavior was often embarassing. Halfway through the decade, he sobered up and retired from performing to become a house-husband and father. In 1980, he launched a comeback with his wife Yoko Ono, releasing the duet album Double Fantasy that fall. Just as his career was on an upswing, Lennon was tragically assassinated outside of his New York apartement building in December of 1980. He left behind an enormous legacy, not only as a musician, but as a writer, actor and activist." - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMG

Lightfoot! - Born Nov 17, 1938 in Orillia, Ontario, Canada, Gordon Lightfoot is best known for his hit "If You Could Read My Mind." This popular folk-rock artist was one of Dan's biggest musical influences.

Paul McCartney.com - Born June 18, 1942 in Liverpool, England. Out of all the former Beatles, Paul McCartney by far had the most successful solo career, maintaining a constant presence in the British and American charts during the '70s and '80s. In America alone, he had nine number one singles and seven number one albums during the first 12 years of his solo career. Although he sold records, McCartney never attained much critical respect, especially when compared to his former partner John Lennon. Then again, he pursued a different path than Lennon, deciding early on that he wanted to be in a rock band. Within a year after the Beatles' break-up, McCartney had formed Wings with his wife Linda, and the group remained active for the next 10 years, racking up a string of hit albums, singles and tours in the meantime.

Charlie McCoy.com - Born Mar 28, 1941 in Oak Hill, WV. "Charlie McCoy was perhaps the definitive Nashville session musician, a multi-talented performer best known for his harmonica playing and whose mastery of the instrument virtually defined its role within the context of modern country music." - Jason Ankeny, AMG. Charlie recorded in the studio with Dan on his album High Country Snows in 1985.

Joni Mitchell.com - Born Nov 7, 1943 in Fort McLeod, Alberta, Canada. "When the dust settles, Joni Mitchell may stand as the most important and influential female recording artist of the late 20th century. Uncompromising and iconoclastic, Mitchell confounded expectations at every turn; restlessly innovative, her music evolved from deeply-personal folk stylings into pop, jazz, avant-garde and even world music, presaging the multi-cultural experimentation of the 1980s and 1990s by over a decade." - Jason Ankeny, AMG

Nashnet.com - The official Graham Nash web site. Born Feb 2, 1942 in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, "Graham Nash is one of the most durable and prominent supporting figures in rock music history. As a harmony singer and sometime lead singer with the Hollies and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, his voice is among the most familiar in two distinct eras and schools of rock music. He has since gone on to a productive if usually unexceptional career as a singer/songwriter, both as a solo artist and, more often, in collaboration with David Crosby. He has also reunited periodically with Crosby and Stephen Stills and, more rarely, with Neil Young, and the occasional project with the Hollies." - Bruce Eder, AMG

Gram Parsons.com - Born Cecil Ingram Connor on November 5, 1946 in Winter Haven, FL. Died Sep 19, 1973 in Joshua Tree, CA. Gram Parsons is the father of country-rock. With the International Submarine Band, the Byrds, and the Flying Burrito Brothers, Parsons pioneered the concept of a rock band playing country music, and as a solo artist he moved even further into country music, blending the two genres to the point that they became indistinguishable from each other. While he was alive, Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records, but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rollings Stones to the Byrds. In the years since his death, his stature has only grown, as numerous rock and country artists build on his small, but enormously influential, body of work.

Putnam's success gathered momentum throughout the seventies and early eighties with artists such as Jimmy Buffet, Dan Fogelberg, Kris Kristofferson, and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recording many of their best-selling records under his guidance. Putnam has production or co-production credits on more than 14 platinum records, in addition to his playing credits on more than 2,000 recordings. (For a list of Putnam's recording projects, see his AMG listing.)"

With roots in the Los Angeles country and folk-rock scenes, Linda Ronstadt became one of the most popular interpretive singers of the 1970s. Skaggs Family Records.com - Ricky Skaggs was born Jul 18, 1954 in Cordell, KY. "By the time he was in his mid thirties, Kentuckian Ricky Skaggs had already produced a career's worth of music...The term "multi-talented" lacks the power to characterize this extraordinary singer and instrumentalist. Not only can he sing and pick with the best in progressive country, his broad and deep experience in traditional music separates him from the crowd. In the estimation of many, he is without peer as a combination vocalist and intrumentalist (guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo)." - David Vinopal, AMG

Ringo Starr.com - "Born Richard Starkey on Jul 7, 1940 in Liverpool, England. Ringo Starr was the drummer in the Beatles from 1962 to 1970 and thus one of the most famous musicians of the '60s. Though the least prominent member of the quartet, he distinguished himself as an occasional singer of good-natured material and as an actor. Upon the group's split, Starr went solo with two novelty projects: the first, an album called Sentimental Journey, found him covering pre-rock standards, and the second, Beacoups of Blues, was a country music collection. Starr then scored Top Ten hits with two nonalbum singles, 'It Don't Come Easy' in 1971 and 'Back off Boogaloo' in 1972. In 1973 he paired with producer Richard Perry and, with assistance from the three other ex-Beatles, made Ringo, which featured two #1 hits, 'Photograph' and 'You're Sixteen.' 'Oh My My,' a Top Ten hit, was also included. Almost as successful was the 1974 follow-up, Goodnight Vienna, which featured the hits 'Only You' and 'No No Song.' " - William Ruhlmann, AMG

Stephen Stills.com - "Famed for his work in Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills & Nash, two of pop music's most successful and enduring groups, Stephen Stills was born in Dallas, Texas on January 3, 1945. He became fascinated by music at a young age, and by the age of 15 was playing professionally. In the spring of 1966, after moving to Los Angeles, CA, Stills enlisted Neil Young, Richie Furay, bassist Bruce Palmer and drummer Dewey Martin to form the Herd, later dubbed the Buffalo Springfield. A jam session with ex-Byrd David Crosby and former Hollies member Graham Nash led to the formation of the vocal harmony supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash." - Jason Ankeny, AMG

From his early hits with the James Gang through to his tenure with the Eagles — as well as a successful solo career — Joe Walsh remained one of the most colorful characters in rock & roll, lending his distinctively reedy vocals, off-the-wall lyrics, and expansive guitar leads to a series of AOR staples including "Funk #49," "Rocky Mountain Way," and "Life's Been Good."

Tim Weisberg (AMG listing) - Tim has performed in concert with Dan (Dan Fogelberg Live: Greetings from the West), and on three of Dan's albums: Nether Lands, Twin Sons of Different Mothers in 1978, and No Resemblance Whatsoever in 1995.

Neil Young.com - Born Nov 12, 1945 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. "After Neil Young left the Californian folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield in 1968, he slowly established himself as one of the most influential and idiosyncratic singer-songwriters of his generation. Young's body of work ranks second only to Bob Dylan in terms of depth, and he was able to sustain his critical reputation, as well as record sales, for a longer period of time than Dylan, partially because of his willfully perverse work ethic. From the beginning of his solo career in the late '60s until the late '90s, he never stopped writing, recording and performing; his official catalog only represented a portion of his work, since he kept countless tapes of unreleased songs in his vaults. Just as importantly, Young continually explored new musical territory, from rockabilly and the blues to electronic music." - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMG

Rolling Stone.com - The music industry's news magazine.

RIAA - Recording Industry Association of America
